Year 8 bow out of NI Cup
Cullybackey 1-4 Glengormley HS
Cullybackey College entered their Year 8 team into the NISFA Cup for the first time in recent history. The team were faced with a huge second round game against Glengormley High School, Newtownabbey. Preparation was key and the boys were in a confident mood after winning their previous game against Dunclug College. It was a tight first half affair, as both teams played expansive and open football with chances being created at both ends.
Goalkeeper Harvey Shaw, who stepped in to replace the injured Bryce King-Hay, had a great first half, saving on numerous occasions and clearing his lines well. The referee even noted at half time how superb he was. At the other end Luke McGaughey and Daniel Connolly had chances to open the scoring, but no goals were scored in the first half. Captain Sam Rock started to find more space in the second half, but it was Glengormley who took the lead, with a quick break way past Lowry and King-Hay at the back giving keeper Shaw no chance making it one nil. Soon after, the flying winger, Rhyce Brown-Kerr, managed to escape from the tall, visiting centre back to poke a cross to McGaughey, who equalised with fifteen minutes to go. As the game progressed both sides began to tire quickly and mistakes began to creep in.
Joel Aitchison, Isaac Wylie and Rock all tried to push for the winner, whist at the other end Daniel Lowry was having a stormer in his first start for the school. In the end, Glengormley tucked in three goals (including a great free-kick) to condemn Cullybackey to defeat. They boys can now look forward to the Under 12 Plate draw after half term.
