Year 11 GCSE History students recently made the short journey to the Maine Business Centre to view an outstanding exhibition commemorating ‘Operation Banner’ – the deployment of British troops to Northern Ireland, 1969-2007. Students were afforded the opportunity to meet with Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) soldier Mr. Glen Espie BEM. Glen served in the province during some of the darkest days of the troubles. Students were fascinated by Glen’s personal stories of the suffering and pain that he endured during the Troubles. He brought the students on an emotive journey detailing the two terrorist attempts on his life during the 1970s and 1980s. Students also had the opportunity to meet and chat with the Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner Mr. Danny Kinahan. A big thank you to Glen, Danny and Mr. Alan Murphy who organised the outstanding event that immensely benefited our students.
