Cullybackey College finished 3rd at the Irish Junior Schools’ Championships in Cork on Tuesday 18th August. Having qualified for the event at the beginning of 2020, the boys had to wait until August, following the tournament’s postponement from April due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Finishing only 4 points off the eventual winners, it was an event that will have provided the boys with significant experience as they shouldered the pressure of a province.
Teacher, Mark Surgenor, speaking about the event and the boys’ performance, “It was such an amazing experience for the boys involved. I have watched them play so well and deal with such an intense pressure, at such a young age and have felt really proud of them. There’s no doubt this experience will stand them in good stead, not only as they progress through their golfing lives but also in life itself. Since we arrived on Monday for the practice round, the boys conducted themselves impeccably and professionally, which they carried through to the event on Tuesday. What they have achieved is something they should look back on and feel proud of, as well as set targets to be in that elite arena again. Finally, on behalf of the boys and the college, I would like to thank our sponsors Antrim Construction Company who provided us with the opportunity to give the boys the professional experience and kit them out for the championships.”
