Cullybackey College was recently selected to participate in an Art & Science workshop, facilitated by Belfast School of Art and in conjunction with the N.I. Science Festival.
Louise O’Boyle, Associate Head of the Belfast School of Art, together with Artist in Residence Rebekah Wilson, brought an Art College experience to our department for the afternoon.
Louise introduced the Art & Science programme to our Year 10 pupils, as well as sharing an overview on future opportunities available to our students who wish to pursue their studies within the creative industries.
Rebekah brought along a selection of her work examples, discussed her studio practice and as a recent graduate spoke of her own experiences of studying at art college. Rebekah’s work, which involves creating a slime substance, explores form, texture and colour and as a versatile medium allows an array of possible outcomes to be explored. All pupils learnt how to create their own slime and using a section of other materials on offer, spent the afternoon working either individually or in small teams to produce their own interpretations. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the messy afternoon and our facilitators shared in our pupil’s delight with their work.
Further to this, everyone’s work was later transported to the University of Ulster’s Belfast Campus to be exhibited within their gallery space and open for all to view. The opening night was well attended by both pupils, parents and family. A truly fantastic opportunity for our young people and the first of future collaborations with the Belfast School of Art.
