In the English Department we are passionate about learning and bringing our subject to life. In order to foster a love of Literature, promote cultural awareness and develop your child’s interpersonal skills we offer a comprehensive curriculum, using a range of teaching methods, to help your child to learn and succeed. The ability to communicate confidently, both orally and in writing is at the core of our teaching and is essential in securing success at GCSE and A-Level. The key areas of reading, writing, talking and listening are the foundations of a good education and will prepare your child for the future. We believe that the study of English should be engaging and as such, opportunities to meet with authors, story- tellers and to participate in educational visits and competitions are offered to students.

Key Stage 4
All pupils study the CCEA GCSE English Language specification which is assessed through four units:
Unit 1: Writing for Purpose and Audience and Reading to Access Non-Fiction and Media Texts (an external written examination worth 30% of the GCSE)
Unit 2: Speaking and Listening (a controlled assessment unit worth 20%)
Unit 3: Studying Spoken and Written Language (a controlled assessment unit worth 20%)
Unit 4: Personal or Creative Writing and Reading Literary and Non-Fiction Texts (an external written examination worth 30% of the GCSE)
